Supporting Local Olive Oil Production in the Kurdistan Region: Toward a Sustainable Identity and Distinctive Quality

In recent years, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has witnessed a growing interest in olive cultivation and olive oil production, as this promising crop can become an important agricultural and economic pillar for the region. However, this vital sector faces multiple challenges, most notably the increasing presence of adulterated olive oil in local markets, often sold under misleading labels by certain local and regional traders. This practice negatively affects consumer trust and undermines the reputation and quality of the locally produced olive oil.

Hence, there is an urgent need to raise public awareness about the importance of consuming high-quality local olive oil and to help consumers distinguish between authentic and adulterated products. Achieving this awareness requires well-organized media and promotional campaigns that highlight the nutritional, health, and economic value of Kurdish olive oil while encouraging consumers to support it as a genuine national product.

In this context, the Kores Project, implemented by CIHEAM Bari and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Kurdistan Region, is working comprehensively to empower rural areas through the sustainable development of the local olive oil value chain.

The project aims to build a strong and distinctive identity for Kurdish olive oil by conducting specialized research studies to understand consumer perceptions and behavior toward olive oil, developing effective marketing and promotional strategies, and supporting farmers and producers in adopting best agricultural practices and modern technologies in olive harvesting and processing.

Moreover, the project seeks to establish a recognizable brand identity for Kurdish olive oil, which will help distinguish it in local and regional markets and provide consumers with confidence in its source and quality. This approach aligns with global sustainable development strategies and the local development priorities of the Kurdistan Region, which emphasize supporting local production, protecting consumers, and enhancing employment opportunities in rural areas.

The success of this joint effort between local and international institutions will contribute to improving the quality and marketing of local products, increasing the efficiency of olive oil value chains, and enhancing the competitiveness of this product in the markets. Ultimately, it will benefit farmers and rural communities while reinforcing the principles of sustainable agriculture in the region.

In conclusion, supporting local olive oil production is not merely an economic step; it is an investment in the identity and agricultural heritage of the Kurdistan Region. It underscores the importance of consumer protection and the promotion of clean and sustainable production. Therefore, collaboration among government institutions, farmers, consumers, and international organizations is the optimal path toward building a promising future for the olive oil sector in Kurdistan.
